Tragedy in Thailand: Nine Buddhist Monks Killed After 11-Year-Old Boy Crashes Pickup Truck Into Pilgrimage Procession

Mukdahan Province, Thailand – A peaceful Buddhist pilgrimage walk turned into a devastating tragedy when an 11-year-old boy driving his parents’ pickup truck lost control and plowed into a group of monks in northeastern Thailand, killing nine and injuring more than 20 others.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 2, 2026, along a road in Mukdahan province. Approximately 35 monks and five lay followers from Phu Manorom Temple were walking as part of a 230-kilometer pilgrimage when the vehicle struck them. Five monks died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. Several of the injured remain in critical condition.

Police reported that the boy took his parents’ Isuzu pickup truck without permission. He is currently in custody and will be questioned. Preliminary information suggests he has special needs, and he is too young (under 12) to face criminal charges. Authorities are investigating possible parental negligence.
Community members have responded with an outpouring of support, including blood donations. Condolences have poured in, including for the father of Thai singer Oy Saengsin, who was among those affected.
Buddhist monks hold a revered place in Thai society, and the loss has shocked the nation. The monks were undertaking a traditional alms walk during their pilgrimage when the crash occurred.
This heartbreaking event highlights road safety concerns in Thailand, particularly regarding young or unlicensed drivers. Local authorities have not released the boy’s name due to his age.
