Female UK Prison Officer Jailed for Sexual Relationship with Convicted Murderer at HMP Whitemoor

March, Cambridgeshire, UK — A 29-year-old female prison officer has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after admitting to a romantic and sexual relationship with a convicted murderer serving time at one of Britain’s maximum-security facilities.
Rebecca Green, of Holbeach in Lincolnshire, began the inappropriate relationship with inmate John Otugade in October 2022 while working at HMP Whitemoor, a high-security prison housing some of the UK’s most dangerous criminals. Otugade is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years for the 2012 murder of a London bouncer.
How the Relationship Was Exposed
Suspicions arose in spring 2023, prompting an internal investigation. Otugade was subsequently transferred to HMP Belmarsh in southeast London. Police seized Green’s mobile phone, which contained messages confirming the intimate nature of the relationship.
Further evidence emerged from Otugade’s prison-approved contact list, where he had listed a phone number belonging to Green under the name “partner.” Authorities described the affair as a serious breach of trust and a compromise to prison security.

Sentencing and Official Reaction
Green pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office (also referred to as wilful misconduct in public office). On June 24 (or late June), Cambridge Crown Court sentenced her to one year and four months (16 months) in prison.
Cambridgeshire Police emphasized the gravity of the offense. A statement noted: “This was a serious breach of Green’s responsibilities.” Her actions undermined the professional standards expected of prison staff and potentially jeopardized the safety and integrity of the facility.
HMP Whitemoor, operated by His Majesty’s Prison Service, is designed to hold Category A prisoners—those whose escape would pose a serious risk to the public. Relationships between staff and inmates are strictly prohibited and can lead to criminal charges.
This case highlights ongoing challenges within the UK prison system regarding staff-inmate boundaries and security protocols. Green is now incarcerated herself, serving her sentence for the very type of misconduct she was employed to prevent.
