Woman Dies After Alligator Attack in Florida; Boyfriend’s Rescue Attempt Described by Authorities
A 31-year-old woman died after being attacked by a large alligator while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River in Florida, according to state wildlife officials. The incident occurred in shallow water after she and her companions had been hiking in the area.
Authorities said the woman’s boyfriend immediately tried to rescue her, physically pulling her from the alligator during the attack before calling 911 for emergency assistance. First responders transported her to a hospital, but she died from her injuries. Investigators later captured two large alligators from the area as part of the ongoing investigation, and DNA testing is being conducted to determine which animal was responsible.
Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said fatal alligator attacks are rare but reminded the public that alligators can be present in many freshwater bodies across the state. They advise avoiding swimming in areas where alligators may be present and remaining alert near natural waterways, particularly during nesting and mating seasons.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
