Maryland Jury Convicts Father in Christmas Eve Fatal Shooting of 4-Year-Old Son

A Maryland jury has found 30-year-old Mark Jones Jr. guilty in connection with a Christmas Eve shooting that resulted in the death of his four-year-old son, Jacobi Jones, and left two other family members injured.

According to prosecutors, police responded to a domestic-related shooting at the Ross Ridge Apartment Homes in Rosedale on the morning of December 24, 2024. Officers found four people suffering from gunshot wounds, including two young children and their mother.

All four victims were transported to a hospital. Jacobi Jones later died from his injuries, while his one-year-old sister, Peyton, and their mother, Promyss Marcelle, survived and received medical treatment. Jones was also hospitalized after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the shooting followed a prolonged period of conflict between Jones and Marcelle. The jury heard evidence that the pair had exchanged text messages before the incident, with Marcelle repeatedly asking Jones to leave her apartment.

Prosecutors alleged that after the exchange, Jones entered the room where Marcelle and the children were located and opened fire. The firearm used in the incident was registered to Jones, according to court testimony.

The defense and prosecution presented their respective arguments during the trial before the jury returned a guilty verdict.

The case has drawn attention to the devastating impact of domestic violence on families and children. Advocates continue to encourage anyone experiencing domestic abuse or threats of violence to seek assistance from law enforcement or local support services before situations escalate.

Sentencing will take place at a later date in accordance with the court’s schedule.
