Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — One of two teenage suspects wanted in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Penn State student William “Billy” Schmidt has been captured in Colorado after a nearly month-long manhunt, authorities announced.

Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, was arrested Wednesday evening in Colorado Springs by the U.S. Marshals Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force. He initially tried to deny his identity, officials said. Outen-Fleming faces charges including murder, robbery, criminal conspiracy, and firearms offenses in connection with Schmidt’s death on June 6.

The Shooting

Schmidt was shot and killed in South Philadelphia while walking home from a bar after watching the NBA Finals. Surveillance video captured the incident, which police believe was an attempted robbery. A second 16-year-old suspect, Kaiseem Smith, remains at large. Both teens are wanted on multiple felony charges.

Stepmother’s Husband Arrested

Additionally, Dante Abdul Malik (also referred to as Donte Abdulmalik), 35—the stepfather of Outen-Fleming—was arrested on charges of hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence. Authorities allege he helped the teen flee Philadelphia after the shooting.

The arrests mark a significant development in a case that has drawn widespread attention, especially given Schmidt’s status as a beloved college student. A reward had been offered for information leading to the suspects’ capture.

The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement works to apprehend the second suspect and build the case for prosecution.
