The pair, known from the Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, scaled the iconic 1,454-foot antenna on July 1, 2026. Dressed in black and wearing masks, they unfurled a large black banner reading: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” What followed appeared to be an elaborate marriage proposal, with Beerkus getting down on one knee as the couple balanced on a narrow ledge high above Manhattan.

The Climb and Arrest

The stunt, which required shutting down streets and powering down the building’s antenna for safety, drew a major NYPD response. The couple was arrested upon descent and faced felony charges including reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, burglary, and BASE jumping. They were arraigned on July 2 and released under court supervision.

Photos and videos of the proposal quickly went viral, showing the couple embracing and kissing atop the spire with stunning city views in the background. Nikolau shared close-ups of the ring on social media before their arrest.

A History of High-Risk Adventures

Nikolau and Beerkus are seasoned “rooftoppers” known for scaling some of the world’s tallest structures without safety harnesses. Their relationship and exploits were chronicled in the popular Netflix film, which highlighted both the thrill and dangers of their passion.

While the climb brought global attention and romantic admiration online, it also drew criticism for the risks involved and the resources required for their rescue and arrest. The Empire State Building stated the incident did not endanger tenants or visitors.
