Community outrage continues in Senatobia, Mississippi, after a 1-year-old boy, Kohen Kartier Wiley, was fatally shot by police in a Walmart parking lot. Protesters gathered Tuesday night, leading officers to deploy tear gas outside the store.

According to authorities, officers responded to a shoplifting call when they encountered two adults and the child fleeing into a vehicle. As the car drove toward officers, one fired shots, striking Kohen. The toddler’s family says his mother tried to alert police that a baby was inside.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, has strongly criticized the incident. State investigators are now reviewing evidence and statements for the attorney general’s office.
